The Hydrangea name comes from the Greek word water “hydros” and jar or jug. Since the ancient period in time, the Hydrangea name remained popular with people. The Hydrangea reminded the ancient Greeks of a water jug, but unlike jugs or jars, the Hydrangea flower doesn’t hold water. During the cultivation of this flower, a lot of moisture is required – hence the meaning behind its name. The Hydrangea has a very rich symbolic meaning across the world. In Japan, where it was first cultivated, the Hydrangea represents apology and gratitude. This flower has a very strong position in Japan’s tradition, and people usually gift the Hydrangea to others as a sign of apology. An old story speaks about the emperor of Japan and a young maiden, who received Hydrangea flowers from the Emperor as an apology for his absence.
